Don`;t pick up bad habits in the beginning as I did. keep your left hand`s palm off the violin`s neck. hold you bow correctly curling your fingers round the stick and balancing it with you pinkie. Get a good shoulder rest so that you can just hold your violin using only your head and shoulder, though keep ready to catch just in case.
Good luck, it took me 10yrs of playing I started enjoying it, so have patience.

Yeah, Try not to fall into bad habits.. like about, palm off the neck! Its best to have someone show you how to move your bow, while bowing, keep your bow straight and use your wrists in a fluid motion. I was doing that alot when I started. Most importantly, make sure your violin in always in tune when you play!

Trying to fall in bad habits, and I fell in some anyway.
How can I avoid them?
I fell in some bad habits, and I can follow the lessons,
and I can peform some musics. Then I overcome the bad habits later.
It requires a lot of effort. However, they may not really habits,
for the newbee may not have any habits at all. I think only experts
have habits.
Now, I am thinking, which amongst the two is the better:
1- Keeping out of bad habits from the beginning
that makes learning almost impossible?
2- Letting the bad habits take you, to learn easy things first,
then correcting bad habbits while continuing with your lessons?

Staying away from bad habits in the beginning is better because it`s really hard to correct them later. It took me three years to fix my habit of not bowing parallel to the bridge and not using full bows and it was very frustrating for both my teacher and me.

Get some lessons from a good, enthusiastic, patient teacher. And... don`t hesitate to branch into other styles after you get started. You`ll have fun playing jazz fiddle, folk fiddle, bluegrass fiddle, etc. There is much more than what many violin teachers will tell you.
Have fun!
