I`m very amazed by the fact that the cheapest violin can be cheaper than a cheapest piano, flute, viola and cello, but yet the most expensive violin can be more expensive than the most expensive piano, flute, viola and cello.

Violin is such a beautiful instrument, i wonder why it is not as appealing as the piano to most people. There seem to be more people wanting to learn the piano than the violin. I personally prefer the violin, though i`m quite good at the piano. After learning the violin, i find the piano less musical and hence more boring. No instruments can stir my emotions like the violin does.

I totally agree with you! I`ve been wanting to play the violin for years. 3 months ago I finally started and I love it! Since I started playing I`m much more relaxed. I even sleep better.

Yes, a violin can be either $69 or One Million, but we can see why. There really isn`t much material to a violin, it`s less complex than a flute or piano. At the upper end, it`s the tone, and the passion for the tone that creates value.

We have several violins, pianos (multiple) and other instruments in my family.

One of the pianos, a Grand Piano over 100 years old, apparently has very little value. It seems more of a liability than an asset. Oh, how I wish it were a violin, or even a mandolin instead.

About what you play. I agree with your observation, and validate with hundreds of personal experiences. I think that others who want to play an instrument choose piano over violin, because piano is more mainstream culture, and you can see the keyboard and all the notes, and picture "well, if I press this key, this will happen." That`s what I believe, from listening to others. It`s like the violin is a little mysterious or something, plus people are afraid of making an awkward sound, which can happen.

And yes, the violinist in the family get`s this all the time, from dozens of friends and people in general "why do you play violin?". "You HAVE a piano."

Okay, some people think it`s so wonderful to own a piano, that`s part of the reason for the comment. What, with traditional family forms declining, and people on the move, an in apartments etc.; some think a piano is a luxury. But I can`t fully understand either why they think a violin is something like poison ivy?

... still researching this dark mystery ...

I love the violin more than any other instrument too, but i desperately want to learn the piano as well. I stopped taking piano lessons when I started violin (at age 7) and I wish that I could have continued learning both instruments, but my parents couldn`t afford lessons for both. I`m very glad that I chose violin, but now I`m hoping to start piano again. I love, well, the chords on the piano, and all the different things it can do because it enables you to play so many notes at once. I went to an amazing piano recital last night (by the students of the teacher who I`m hoping will someday have time to give me piano lessons) and it made me sad that I gave up piano.

In my opinion, the violin is much more fun to see played and to play it yourself. It has some sort of magical attraction to it. It`s on my list of picking it up someday in the future to learn the greatness of it..

haha the above is all very true =)
it`s also a very `social` instrument. you can play it in so many different ensembles. It`s good for soloing, duoing, trioing [two w/ a cello], quadrupling [two w/ a viola & and cello] symphony orchestra, string orchestra and more...
the more you play it the more you love it

I prefer the violin to the piano (although I play both) because of the distance between the body and the instrument.

To me, I feel `further` away from the piano, therefore it isn`t as personal to me as is the violin.

Btw, Joshua Bell`s Strad costs 3-4 million.

hha strads, those things are nice.

people choose piano over violin because its so easy. theres nothing to piano, (i play both) however, piano is a good starting point for many... to go right ahead with the violin would be a challenge, when you take piano you learn all the notes on the staff, and the basic sound of each note, with violin, everything is guess and check for the most part.

I agree with Kirk.

I started violin at the age of 12 and have been playing for about 3 years plus now. I`ve just recently started the piano. It`s totally different!

It was easier for me to play the piano when I started compared to when I started the violin.
I could play `Jingle Bells` on the first day of playing the piano whereas I was still cleaning up on `Twinkle Twinkle` on the violin in my second class!

But I still love playing the violin compared to the piano.

no i guess not, strads are expensive, and rare, but i dont think they cost the most.

haha yes, violin is more fun to play. so much more expressive. and violins look sexy (especially the electrics) but pianos are fat
