Broken String?

Hello there! I`m a beginner violist, and today something weird happened, when I was playing my A string, it made a *Tunk!* like sound and it became loose, when I checked the string it seemed fine to me, however when I tried to tune it by turning the peg, it returned to the loose position by itself... does that mean I broke the string? I mean, I thought the only way to notice that, is when the string just... gets out of the violin/viola in a violent way hehe... Well thanks in advance!

It`s not the string, it`s the peg. While tuning it up, push the peg inwards.
The first time this happened to me it confused me, but it`s perectly normal.

Thank you! I`ve just done it, and now it`s fixed. I was a little surprised/dissapointed because the string was actually new, but now it sounds great again. Thanks

Of course you broke a string when you can`t tighten the string when you turn the peg and itsn`t it obvious because the sound the string made. You need to learn a whole lot of things before you become a violist.
