Throwing my $.02 in here:
I`m Kat, I just graduated from high school, soon to be a college freshman. I`ve played viola since 5th grade (meaning 8 years) and I`m not sure what "grade" I play. I`ve recieved OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) ratings of 1 (superior) in both classes A and B and preformed a class AA viola/cello duet at my final high school concert with a good friend. I was in two local youth symphonies and sat as viola section leader for two years in one of them, as well as section leader in both groups at my high school (viola in advanced orchestra, cello in the lower orchestra). I also play cello, flute, clarinet and mallet percussion (xylophone, marimba and vibes).

Hey, it`s nice to see people here again. Well, Justin, as a reply to your question, the viola has 4 open strings, all tuned in fifths. The lowest one is the C String, then the G String, then the D string, then he highest is the A string. Music for viola is written in the alto clef most of the time, but when you shift pretty high, the notes are usually transferred to treble clef, so you might want to learn the treble clef!
Now, as for Ashley, Hi! I`ve started the viola in gr.7 also and have been playing for 3 years also! I love it!
