I`m making a hurdy gerdy and the plans call for two viola strings, (a "gut type" D and C string) the local music shop wants £20 for one!. I`m wondering is there anything special about Viola strings? what gage are they? I`m thinking of using instead a cut down guitar string, if i can find the right gage.

it depends on the quality of your instrument

I highly recemend you do NOT use a guitar string if that is what you where planing on doing cause it can mess up your bridge and your pegs and maybe your finger board. It is not a very good idea. Maybe try getting strings on the internet for cheaper.....ebay i don`t know..search around. good luck
