Has anybody seen viola music written in bass clef ? I recently came across some. I find it strange. I don`t know how to read bass clef.

No, I am pretty sure viola can`t go that low. Are you sure it wasn`t trebble clef or tenor clef? Sorry if I`m making you sound stupid....

I have recently come across treble clef in my music. At first I thought it seemed strange, too. If it is the treble clef, what looks like an open D (second space down from the top) is A. Hope that helps.

Here is how to read in bass clef:

Your low C is the second space from the bottom of the clef.

Your open G is the two spaces above that.

Your open D is two spaces above that.

Transpose from there.
However, I must say I`ve never ran across bass-clef for viola either...

It`s entirely possible to play in bass clef: if one is playing a tenor line in (eg) a hymn tune from two stave music then one would be reading bass clef. It isn`t viola music but it can certainly be done easily enough.

Sometimes the viola music goes into bass clef if the music descends into the lower reigister. Rare but you do see it sometimes. As a violist its good to know all clefs. Treble, Alto, Tenor and Bass. All the professional violists in the major orchesstras know how to read bass clef with ease.

sorry but i have to say i have music like that too it is just an add on. It`s made for another instrument and violas should know all the cleffs only if they want to play a different instrument. It doesn`t make you better it just makes you have a bit more brought on talent.
-I asked my orchestra teacher-
-for some-
-the rest-
-was in my book-

The music can go into treble on the A string you shift up that high. Although I don`t play viola (yet) I know music theory and you can go into treble and bass cause doesn`t the C go into bass? I think so cause the viola clef is between treble ans bass.

1) The lowest octave of the viola`s range all fits comfortably into the bass clef without leger lines (not counting middle C).

2) If you only read alto clef you`re going to have a hell of a time communicating with other musicians. The viola is the only modern instrument that currently uses the alto clef. (The double bass, cello, bassoon, and trombone all use the tenor clef, and far too many instruments use the treble and bass clefs to list here.)
