I agree! all we do is dum-dum...dum...do and they are playing the beautiful solos and things. I will now begin writing a piece with lots of viola action! Lol.. thanks for the inspiration.

I agree. In my school orchestra, we olayed this really cool song for our Spring concert. Then we played it for the District- Wide orchestra festival, but we had to cut the end off because it would be too long. And the end was my favorite becasue that was a time where us Violists woudl get a melody (that was noticable and without the Volins) What I'm saying is, we do get the melody a good amount of time, but most of the time it's wwith the violins, so all you hear is them, due to there being close to 50 of them and 10 of us.

Ok..........if all the parts for viola were so easy and stupid, then why is it so incredibly hard to get into a good symphony. You need skill, credibility, and the mind of a musician. You are all generalizing to much. It sounds like all of you have only been playing for a few years, anyways. You haven't even began to play all of the difficult repetoire that classical music has to offer. Viola's aren't just there for show, they provide a warm tone under the melodies and they lighten everything up. You need a good ear to understand the importance of the viola parts in a symphony when you here it, and join a youth symphony. Organizations like those really open up beginners to the hard-core music of the alto clef in orchestration.

Hello all! new here! I read through this thread and all its messages! I agree with all of you. Us violists don't get the melody pretty much all of the time!! It's all for the violins and chellos!! I just had my last concert of my school year just a couple weeks back and we had our best violist do a very long solo where is was just this one viola playing!! I thought it was just great!!

Thought I'd get my ideas out there!!

You guys never get the melody because most regular school orch. play watered-down versions of the real things! And cello's is spelled without an 'h'.

i agree most strongly!!! im in love w/ POTC and wen ever i find music its alwayz 4 the stupid violins!!! violas r just as smart. im a violist and i can play better then tons of the violinist at my skewl!!! HA! in ur face stupid violins!!! violas need 2 speek out! that y i joined being a viola. we need 2 stand up 4 our rights in the orchestra and become one.

The only reason you have crappy, easy parts is because you're not playing any decent music. Get to professional level, get out of playing Mozart viola parts, and you'll find that viola parts are extremely difficult.

eh don't knock mozart. His symphony parts suck but mozart himself liked to play the viola in chamber ensembles.
