it is pretty hard to get the hang of it. what u really need 2 remember is that you need 2 relax!!! when i learned vibrato, i used this excercise and it seemed 2 help. get one of those little jingling cat toys (theyr little balls with bells inside) and shake it back and forth at the wrist. this is the basic motion for vibrato. of course this will not get your vibrato perfect, but it is a start. when practicing on your instrument, shake your fingers back and forth (vertically along the string) with that same motion. u might need to swivel your hand a bit to get it to work the right way, depending on how u practiced the cat toy excercize. make sure you are relaxing your arm and hand and are only moving your hand, not the arm! this should help you. try to get more help from your teacher, or at least make sure you are learning it the right way.
for most people, it takes a very long time to get vibrato. its one of those things where you wake up one morning and you can do it, but do keep practicing.
*the jingling in the cat toy helps you because you can hear the consistancy of shakes; try to keep them equal. start off slow and move your way up.
hope this helps! good luck.

ya, another exercise is to get a metronome, and set it at a fairly low tempo, and move your finger back and forth along the fingerboard with the metronome beat, over and over again. When you`re sick of doing that, set the metronome at a higher tempo.
