Hi,

I am 15 and I have just passed my grade 5 violin exam, and my teacher asked me if I had ever thought of playing viola. I said yes, which is the truth. She told me all the things which are different, such as the infamous alto clef.

So I was wondering if there were any good method books out there in the market where I can learn the general jist of the alto clef, as well as tuning myself to the differences. I want a book which doesn`t have a load of stuff on rhythm like for children, I want one which has a variety of different notes and rhythm, so something around Grade 3/Grade 4 standard.

Many thanks

you should just get a viola teacher. If you really want to be a violist, you gotta learn from the heart, not the books...(suzuki is a good bet)

I`ve recently come across a couple of cello method books that restrict themselves to teaching the tenor clef. I found them searching amazon.com. The difference is that the cello`s main clef is the bass clef, not the tenor clef. The analogous thing for viola, I suppose, would be a method book devoted to the treble clef.
