I think a bright tone is whats big in contemporary, especially violaa. But it can all depend on the build of the instrument. My viola has a very warm texture, but it is almost muffled. That is why i try to choose strings that will lighted/brighten the sound while giving it more quality at the same time. Your personal taste relies on it greatly.

My computer is peculiar....one post at a time......
To me it really doesn't matter at what it sounds like unless it sounds scratchy. Mine kinda has a warm sound to it. Nice and smooth. I would tell you what type it is but I don't know what brand my teacher put on it. Alls I know is my D string is one of the cheaper ones cause my teacher put the same brand on like 3 times and they all broke so she had to put a cheaper one on.
Well, I guess the instrument doesn't matter as much as how you play. If you are a talented skillfully gifted musician, than the instrument could matter, barely.
