I don`t play the viola, I play the cello, but if I could play 2 instruments, I sooo would play the viola. I don`t know why more people don`t, though, because the violins dead popular, and the viola is similar, but nicer, I think. one random question; is the viola tuned A,D,G,C like the cello? just wondering. Bye.

I don`t know why nobody wants to play the viola. It`s way better then the violin. Maybe everyone wants to play the violin because they get the melody. Does anyone know whats up with the viola jokes????? They are so not funny and its not our fault if we don`t get the melody very often. Violins can`t go as low as we can and we can go pretty much as high as they can. But the violin section is soooo much more crowded and violas get jobs more often.............so there are good points in having a small section. Plus you have to be EXCELLENT to get noticed in a violin section, HA VIOLINS!!!! Everybody who reads this remember VIOLAS RULE!!!!!!!!!!

HI!! My name is Amy, I am 16 and I play viola. WOOHOO!!!!!!! But....sorry to say I also play the violin lol
I`ve played the violin for eight years and I just started the viola a year or so ago. I play viola in youth symphony and will be joining a suzuki orchestra this year. (I am not a suzuki kid/student though) although I do use the books.
Why all the viola jokes??? I don`t know?? But violas just don`t have a good reputation, although I really don`t know why!!
OK, somebody talk to me because it doesn`t look like anybody`s been on here for awhile!!

Hey, I have been playing the viola for two years so far. I think the reason that there are so few of us is because the first thing that people think when they hear orchestra is VIOLIN... My sister got me started on the viola. She played viola for 4 years and then swiched to the cello. I am just about to go to the 9th grade, so hopefully there will be more violists around (i was the only one in my grade). I personally hate the violin... I have no idea why there are so many viola jokes.

I used to play the viola as a child and I have just recently bought one and am taking lessons. I love it and am so glad I decided to get back into it. Everyone asked my why I didn`t buy a violin and my response is that I just like the sound of the viola better. It is just so calming and has a great range.

Maybe it is because it is easier for most people to play the outer parts of a piece. The middle parts need to keep it all together, usually without the benefit of a complete melodic line that is continuos from beginning to end, so there is not the benefit of "following along untill you get it" opportunity that the outer parts can take advantage. To be good at playing viola in most ensemble pieces, you really have to pay attention to tonality. I think the jokes came about due to the fact that, traditionally, sloppy violinists were herded into the viola section, where it was thought they wouldn`t be heard. Unfortunately, it is probably the one string section that really can`t have any stragglers!
I remember my grade school days...the teacher was always moving the "slower students" into the viola. Usually, just a tuned-down violin!! Now, how is that a way to start a career?????
Violists! Be proud and read your Primrose! Also, play Bach. He was a violist`s composer. There are secrets in those lines, no-one has found all them. Perhaps you could be the one to find the next gem!

There`s this one girl at my school who really snobby about how good she is. maybe that`s why. Aren`t there any more guys who play the viola? I feel so left out. Anyway I`ve been playing the piano for about 9 years already and I think I`m sick a tired of it. I wanted something cool, something different, something nobody played. Then I turned to the viola. I`m sorry to say that I haven`t started taken lessons or even have one, but I did have a sudden urge to start playing. So I convinced my parents and they said it was okay. I should be starting this November. I`m so excited. The viola is so much better than the violin. By the way, I wanted to play the viola before I knew it was so ragged on. I still want to play it. I`m so devoted to it now. And seriously! What`s up with all these jokes!
