Can anyone help me choose the correct size strings to buy? My daughter says her strings are dead from age and use. I notice some premium synthetic string manufacturers sell 3 or 4 different length strings. For example, the "Thomastik Vision" sets come in at least 4 sizes. My daughter has two medium quality viola's, one rated 15" and another 15-1/2". Some shorter strings specify they fit up to 15-1/2", so I'm not comfortable assuming these will fit our viola of that exact sizing.
Some strings are spec'd for a working range in centimeters starting about 34cm to 42 cm for the big viola's. I would guess this measurement is more accurate for determining string sizing, as compared to body length. How exactly is this cm spec measured on the viola...from what to what??
If a new string is too long, can you simply cut it with sharp wire cutting pliers or is there some finishing treatment on the end of these synthetic core composite strings that will be damaged from cutting it?
How many revolutions of string on the thumb winder thingys do you need as a minimum?
As you can tell I'm a real expert in this field lol.
Please don't tell me to take my viola to a shop. I do EVERYTHING myself from rebuild my BMW transmission to replace my central A/C. I've installed strings before, planed & shaped a new bridge and glued the neck back on a viola after it was dropped. So far, so good.
I just don't want to buy $70 worth of strings the wrong length.
Thanks for any advice.

Don't cut the strings, whatever you do. There is definetly the right size out there. Try measuring the body of the instrument. Shoulder to end button. If it really is 15 in, then get 15 in strings, or 16 if your worried. Thomastic Dominant are the best strings you can buy, idk about vision. Otherwise ask the stoore clerk.
