I don`t believe anyone really needs six hour lessons five days a week all year round. In fact, I`ve never heard of that before. I`m at a grade five level, so I`m admitedly not college level yet, and I have half hour lessons once a week. The more advanced students I know spend about an hour once a week. The really advanced students have hour long lessons every few days, or three to four hour long lessons once or at most twice a week.
Also, why doesn`t the student or the teacher ever get any holidays?
Anyway, I`m sure there is at least one affordable teacher out there, even if, as you say, you don`t think he`ll ever need lessons.

okay, here`s what i think doesn`t make sense about all the lessons and the fact that they are 6 hours each and almost every day of the week. i believe that it does take TIME to soak in the information that you learn in a lesson. that usually doesn`t happen overnight, and it takes constant practice for your mind and body to learn and adapt. ifyou have a 6 hour lesson, you wear yourself out and are full of new information but your brain can`t process it. then the next day, you go and learn MORE stuff, and the process snowballs...do you get what i`m trying to hint at? i haven`t sat in at one of your son`s lessons, but sounds like you`re paying a teacher to watch your son practice rather than teach! once a week lessons or 2 is definitely max that i would recommend. hope this explanation kind of made some sense and hope you rethink how your child is getting the education. it might not be the teacher, it might be the whole process at which you`re approaching.

Your right Fluteloops, When i take him to lessons the teacher doesn`t even bring a violin. The tutor grabs my sons 1/2 size violin and uses that. They never once play one piece together.
After some of the rude comments from such "professional musicians" I am now pretty sure i don`t want my son to be one any more.

well, not all professionals are `rude`. i also want to be a professional when i graduate from college. i think that if that`s what your son wants to do, then support him, but you never nkow, he might end up changing his mind

best of luck

oh, and keep in mind, this is an online forum. people may say they`re professional when they are not (no one in particular, just...general rule!)

to dave and the rest of the crew. leave `not sure` alone as she is only doing what she feels best for her son; even if it`s not what you think you would do in her situation. she`s only here for answers, not people telling her that she`s doing a bad job raising her child.

so what.

shes upset that other people are earning a living.

shes ticked off that no one is good enuff to teach her kid.

and shes got her 12 year old in lessons 6 hours a day.

it would be crazy to think u could admit all that on a public forum and then not expect to get criticized.

let`s get real, its not like shes worried where their next meal is coming from. this is about music lessons.
no one else is dishing out 80grand in lessons either.

Well I`ve been a professional musician since I was about 13 and I`m by no means a child prodigy. Never had a lesson, just 5th and 6th grade band class and bought books to teach myself with. you have to be motivated. all lessons try to do is mostly get you motivated to improve yourself but if you want to already, why waste your money?
