I find scales relaxing, especially after practicing a difficult peice. If you`ve exhausted major and minor scales ( both melodic and harmonic ), try the weird ones out there. Modal scales are fun, and chromatic scales are more challenging ( aren`t those supposed to be easier on the `cello though? )

i agree with you there, imagin tha world without scales?? i mean think about all the music. Nothing would be harmonic or malodic or anything. it wouold all just be a bunch of random notes. Just a quick question, what inspired you to play the cello? what was there about it???

It doesn`t matter what you play, scales are enjoyable on most instruments . I have heard that clarinets have trouble with them though...

I always start off by playing scales. I think that they’re a good warm-up. So far I’m just playing major scales, but I learned the minor scales on the piano when I took piano lessons. I like to play them around the circle of 5ths. So right now I start at d flat and go around clockwise to A. I play some of them one octave and I can play some 2 octaves. I don’t have a scale book. My teacher gives me the fingerings and I memorize them without writing them down. But he also wants me to always know what notes I’m playing, not just finger numbers. It’s easy to do because I know the notes from the piano.

Hi there! Strongly agree with you that scales is really a good warm-up. I started off with that too. Well, it`s best to memorize every scales including the harmonic minor scales and melodic minor scales. Hm... when you reached the 4th octave of the cello, it wounldn`t be a big problem finding the notes in the figering board. But I was kinda struggling when my teacher requested for a 16 slur notes in one bow. Oh... have to work hard right?
Take care everybody

Wow, cellist, that really does sound like hard work. I`m not that far yet to do that many notes in a slur. My teacher usually shows me a certain bowing for scale practice, and then he changes it every once in a while.

Haha... it`s really hard and I had not been really practicing nowadays (I mean 16 slur notes in one bow). But I`ll work hard and I believe I`d make it one fine day...
