3/4 size for adults???    13:29 on Monday, August 15, 2005

Is my cello to big for my hands? I am trying to play a song in A major. Part of the song bounces between C# on the G string and E on the D string. With my index finger on the E my pinky can’t reach the C# without moving my hand out of position. It sounds bad. How common is it for adults to play a 3/4 of 7/8 cello? I`m about 5`10" and my finger span, 6” from my index to my pinky.

thanks

Do you have a teacher? I would think if you are 5`10 (without seeing your hand span) that you should be able to play on a 4/4 `cello. I am 5`7 as an adult and I managed as a 12 year old. Are you keeping your thumb opposite the 2nd finger?

It`s unlikely that you`d need anything smaller than a 4/4, though if you want comfort you coudl go for a 7/8, or an "English model" cello, which are a bit smaller.

I`m not much of a cellist, but from observation, for the interval you`re describing the player seems to me to have his index finger not just stretched back but almost rolled back - if that makes any sense. It`s an enormous stretch.
