What`s the deal with some of these $299 cellos on ebay. I`ve read some helpful articles warning against plywood rental instruments, but these claim to be real spruce and maple student instruments, and even have fine tuners. They even come with a case and bow. Sounds almost to good to be true. Here`s a link: http://members.aol.ebay.com/aboutme/onlineguitar/ Let me know what anyone thinks about these. Is it worth the chance for a beginner like myself?

The newest cellos are the cheapest(cheap wood) and sound the worst which are the ones on that web site and others. The new expensive cellos are made with fine wood, sound good, and are hand carved, the new cheap cellos are made with average wood, totally suck in sound and are machine made. The older cellos(50 to around 400 years old)have been aged over the years (which are more dry, a lot lighter and usually have mold inside which sounds the best. My cello is around 150 years old and I bought it for 450 dollars and more money for fixing the damages.

Thank you for all your help. I lucked out and bought a used cello that my music teacher was selling for another student who only wanted $300. My teacher said it was worth $1000. I beleive it, because it is lighter and more resonant than my first "loaner". It needs a new bow, but I`m not complaining. Also thank you for for the swstrings recomendation. Their prices are the best I`ve seen even with shipping. They`re even better than Shar music. Thanks

swstrings.com is not a website. I tried to go to the site and the browser said that it was unable to locate the site. Maybe you made a mistake in recording and relaying the site. Perhaps it is my fault, but I checked your spelling and my spelling and they were the same. Help me if I did something wrong please. My parents told me to find a cello for a good price and I would like to visit the site you intended for us to visit.

Thank you sir,

Jaden

Thanks for the link, you rock L Weeks. Now I have another question. I am 5`5" and 16 years old, which cello size would accommodate my height best?

Thanks,

Jaden

Either 3/4 or 7/8th`s, but the best size of cello for you is what usually is comfortable for you.I have a full size cello because I am 5`9.5", but the lady that owned it before me was several inches shorter than me.

Thanks so much for the tip. You all have been such great help in assisting me with the purchase of my cello. I need another piece of advice however. Should I try renting a cello first to see how it goes. There is a shop near my city that rents for $32.00/mo. Is that good? In conjunction with that, would any of you know who gives cello lessons in the Atlanta area?

In Atlanta Ga, well if you live in Gwinnett county, just about everyone teaches kids how to play the Cello. In high schools and middle schools they are music teachers to teach kids how to play instruments; their are band teachers to teach kids how to play brass, woodwind and percussion instruments and their are string teachers to teach students have played the base, violin, viola and cello.

Not to mention private teachers. Talk to a middle or high school tacher where to find a tutor.
