Hi,

To get perfect 5ths on my cello I have to play diagonally across the fretboard. Is this normal?

Make sure you have the proper tuning

Yap, yr tuning is what determines if yr talking about just bowing across open strings. And from the word u use `fret board` , I would guess that yr a guitarist, right? Caz we dun call that a fret board...u mean fingerboard.
