If you like the sound of the cello, it is the kind of instrument you will just want to play and work at yourself anyway.
It is a good idea to get a few lessons initially to set you up comfortably (establishing good posture, basic bow technique, etc.) and then you'd be free to go at your own pace.
Good luck deciding!

It is a good idea to even just get a few lessons in lets say a month or two, once you have learned the notes and few basics. Otherwise, you'll do what me, and I'm sure many others too, have done which is when you do get a teacher you have so many bad habits that have to fixed, which will slow down your progress for a while, and not to mention trying to change habits is very annoying.

But, go for it! Learn whatever you want to learn. Knowledge is your greatest weapon.
And the cello is undoubtedly the greatest musical instrument ever created in the history of the world!!! ;)
