Hello! I'm a pianist. I played violin for a few years, and I am now going to start cello!!! What are some specific things I should keep in mind with play cello? Ex: Keeping you pinky finger down, unlike the violin.

Thanks!

I am not a pro cellist, but here are some tips I learned from playing myself and watching others. Something to keep in mind is to make sure that you are bowing in a horizontal line. Gravity pulls the tip of the bow down, so watch your bow. Another is bowhold: gravity pulls the bow down the string, so it takes a harder grip on the bow to keep it in the right place (which varies depending on what you want the tone to be). The pressure on the strings from the bow is greater than that of a violinist to vibrate the string to get a good tone quality. It is very important to develop a good bow hold at the beginning, which I failed to do and am still having problems with. Posture is also important, as it is playing any instrument. The left hand should shape a kind of "C" and pressure on the string from the fingers must be greater than that of a violinist, due to the thicker strings. Sorry if this seems like a lot, but it is actually not enough. Don't try to take it to fast and get upset. Good luck starting the cello!

Thanks!

Also, I don't know what "accessories" to get for playing. You know what I mean? I hope, because I don't really know how else to explain it!

Make sure you also get a rock-stop for your in-pin. Aim to get the most portable one possible, preferably the bumpy rubber square-shaped ones (as opposed to the long wooden kind that fit under a chair leg). A rock-stop is a life saver on tiled or smooth-surfaced floors, but is basically useless on carpet, assuming that your in-pin isn't blunt at the tip.
