Hi,

I saw on a few previous posts that there were some members of this forum that had started playing the cello as an adult.

I have been thinking and researching online about learning how to play the cello for almost 6 months now and seeing posts from other Adult learners is great.

I have some experience with different instruments and reading sheet music and took lessons for almost 8 years as a child to learn how to play the piano, but I really remember dreading going each week. I don't think I saw eye to eye with my teacher This was almost certainly due to the fact that my parents chose a teacher that was located close to us instead of one that I worked well with. In order to make sure that doesn't happen again I am hoping to meet with and interview several teachers.

Does anyone have any advice on the process which they went through in order to find a teacher?

Additionally, I have a list of questions that I want to ask and I have a list of teachers that live in my area, but I would like to have a general idea of how much I should be paying for each lesson. A lot of teachers/ads don't (understandably) put the cost of a lesson with their information and I don't want to end up paying too much.

I don't mean to say that I am bargain shopping or looking for the cheapest teacher, only that I am a little shy and timid sometimes when it comes to discussing money so having a ball park figure going in would be helpful.

Thanks for your time,

Molly

You might try a local stringed instrument shop for a list of local teachers or they might be able to tell you who would have such a list. A good source would be a local luthier that services the instruments of symphony members. I got a list of about ten local teachers that way.

Another way would be to contact a symphony directly on their web site and ask if there are any of their cellists that give lessons.

Around here (Central Florida) the lessons are around 40 to 50 dollars an hour. I have heard other areas are a lot higher.

Good luck,
Bob
