I couple years ago I tried to learn to play bass guitar and couldn`t do it. I found it hard to move up and down the neck quickly and efficiently. I have been able however to learn the drums but still have the desire to learn a true instrument. So is the cello still just as complicated? Do you have to be able to navigate quickly on the neck?

Your the kind of person that puts no effort into playing an instrument,or has no natural musical talent. If you find drums and base guitar hard then no way by any string instrument like cello.
Cos cello involves classical music, reading music, playing in band and lots of HARD EFFORT

Sorry its harsh but its too

Sorry, Jack, I should have made my original message more clear. I am very good at the drums and do play in my brother`s band and have been able to help out musically quite a lot. The reason I have wanted to learn the cello is to help out even more. The kind of music we play is kind of mellow rock where you incorporate string instruments like the cello. A friend of ours is in a band that has accordian in it but they play radiohead songs. So, I work hard at playing music and have a very strong desire to play another instrument. (by the way, I can read music - I took piano lessons for about 2 years) So, maybe that changes your response.

the cello has a lot of shifting (moveing up and dovn the neck) to get different notes. if you are intrested in string instruments the violin also has a lot of shifting but not as much as the cello. stick with it! it`ll come!

ok keenan i play the violin and cello. I have been playing the violin for about 2-3 yrs. now. and the cello only for about a year. i find that i like the violin better. But the cello makes really pretty music. If you really want to learn to play the cello then you need to have alot of patence. ok i didn`t really but now i do because i really wanna learn how to play it. I haven`t learned how to shift yet but i will. Stick w/ it and i think that it is kewl that you play in a band and you play the drums. oh and the piano has a differnt staff than the cello

Of course you can learn to play the cello!!!!
Jack`s harsh response certianely needs to be taken "lightly" to say the least! I think his response reflects a frailty in his character!
YOU CAN DO IT.....JUST LIKE JACK DID!!!!!!

Ok, here`s the truth. String instruments are really hard to play. To learn, That`s easy. But to master it, it`s no small feat. It takes some long years of tedious practice and u`ll find that irritating problems will keep popping up over the years. But everytime u work out those problems...what u get is a sense of achievement that stays and grows within u.
So my advice... all u need is love for music and lots of determination for working out those tacky problems.
This is what I always tell my students... If u love music and love yr instrument as much as life itself...than it will love u just as much and take good care of u.
So dun worry, go get a cello and start lessons asap. You`ll love it!!!

you could play the cello if you want but if you play in a band that is modern (well you know what i mean) then you might be better playing the double bass because they play all the beat notes whereas if you played the cello then you would only really be playing the bass notes and for a cello thats not really a good thing!
did you get the idea from that film `School of Rock` ????

I`m a cellist and I can PATHETICALLY play the guitar. I think there is a big difference in shifting. Guitars/Bass both shift horizontally. Cellos shift vertically. There`s a lot less friction, gravity`s on your side (in one direction, anyway) and it`s, in my opinion, a much less awkward position for the hand. I think you should at least try it for a year. (Yes, but the beginnings of most instruments is hard and boring)

Drums are a real instrument jack-ass, and if you think otherwise you must really freakin` suck at drums too...
You admit you suck at guitar, you obviously suck at drums....give it up man....pick up ballet or something

I played the flute for a few years but now i want to play the cello because i really like the sound. However, I`m currently almost 17, and people say that you have to start really early if you want to play it well. But im a pro at music theory and i learn really fast, so is it worth pursuing?
