I am looking to buy a medium priced cello. I am willing to spend from 500 to 700 dollars. I would like some recommendations about what to look for in a cello (for example what are the best tone woods), as well as advice on specific cellos which people have seen and played. Also any recommendations about reputable internet dealers. Please do not hesitate to answer with very basic information about cellos. I know nothing about them and would like to get the best quality instrument available in this price range. Any and all feedback will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
JH

I have been searching the web for cellos and have found that the only hand carved cellos made with tone woods in my price range are made by Cremona. Does anyone know why they are considerably less expensive than instruments with comparable specifications?

Thanks again,
JH

I find that hard to believe. you could get a Gliga (low end) for $718 and Chinese ones will be a lot cheaper than that. We could even get you a solid woods Chinese one sent from the UK within that price range. Look a bit harder!

THE ONLY CELLOS YOU WILL FIND THAT SOUND GOOD WHICH ARE FROM $500-700 ARE OLD ANTIQUES on www.ebay.com!!! Dont even think about buying a new cello for that much that sounds good because you wont find one.

Sean always says that

If you find a good cello for that price, used, on ebay, fine. Make sure that you get a cast iron guarantee from the seller that it is in full playing order, otherwise the repair bill could easily double what you pay for it. Ebay is a risky place.

Liz,

Yes you are right, BUT I have seen a friend of mine with a NEW cello that was falling apart with open seems and cracks. My old 150 year old cello that I bought for $400 was in almost better condition.

I do agree, ebay is a risky thing. The only way that you are going to find any kind of an instrument under $1,000.00 is if you buy a Glaesel or something like that, and if you ever plan to do anything with music, then you will easily need to spend double that to get a good beginner instrument. If you are insistant on getting a brand-new instrument, I`d have to say that for the price, Kohr is probably the best deal around, although, if you have a little bit more money, I hear a lot of good things about the Eastman cellos as well. I played on a Kohr instrument for 4 years, and have recently bought a Pedersen from Robertson`s shop in Albuquerque, NM. I spent close to $6,000.00 for my cello, but I`m into concerto literature, and needed the upgrade. Mostely, it depends on how far you plan on going with your musical talent. If you plan to study for years, then get a good starter instrument, but if you are just going to play around, then don`t waste your money.

I must consider myself a very lucky person for buying a cello off of eBay for less than 200 dollars and be content with my instrument. Make sure that "if" eBay is the place you decide to buy your instrument off from. Check for the sellers feedbacks and see how many people have been satisfied with that sellers items. That`s what I did and professional people that have gone to him are very pleased. So, I took my chance and here I have my cello. I am happy and it sounds great. Life is all about taking risks! Good luck and have a good day.
