I just started playing an old 3/4 student cello my wife has had for years. I really like it and would like to take lessons and start playing seriously. I would like to buy a 4/4 cello at some point in the near future. How hard would it be to adjust and "relearn" finger spacing on a longer fingerboard? Would I be better off just taking the plunge and buy a full-size cello now? I went to a shop and played a 4/4 and noticed the difference immediately just playing a simple scale - and I have only played the 3/4 maybe 6 hours in total. I have a decent ear and the intervals were already "burned" in based upon the 3/4. Would it be difficult to adjust?
THANKS!
Gary

In due course you should get a 4/4. The proportions of a smaller instrument will be out of synch with your body - either you will be bowing too high up your body or you`ll be fingering too low. The main adjustment is physically you will have to stretch further, but don`t worry about "burning" the wrong intervals into your brain- you will find that your brain automatically makes the adjustments to get the right notes. Everyone has to make such adjustments anyway as the fingers get closer together when you move into higher positions up the fingerboard. Accordingly, although you would be better off getting a 4/4 in due course, you don`t need to get hysterical about not playing the 3/4 and getting the wrong spacings "burned" into your brain - you can play the 3/4 as long as you like, you will readjust when you get the 4/4.
