I`ve been studying violin for 4 years now, I started out the cello but I found it too dificult and dropped it, I prefer the violin cause it`s more comfortable and easy to take out.

I just started playing the violin and can`t get the instrument to stop squeaking! Can somebody perhaps list ways in which you can prevent squeaking or how it happens?
- Yah sure, get good strings because the ones you have probable suck.

I`ve just brought this forum up by chance, but have to say that I`m 43 and started to play the cello a year ago - so it`s never to late to learn!

I am 45. I started violin three years ago and just bought a $100.00 Cello from ebay. I am fascinated as to the differences between how one plays them. I cannot say that I have played the cello at all, as I just got the thing in tune after the better part of a week tweaking it and two strings later. If I can figure this thing out, anyone can.

This is my fourth year playing the cello, and I`m getting REALLY good! The cello is definitely WAY easier than the violin, but it still requires practice `n` stuff. It`s super fun, though, and I don`t mind practicing. (This is just about the only thing I`m ever willing to practice. LOL

Hello,
I`m learning to play the cello and read the notes ( solfege ).
I was wandering if anyone knew of a site where I could find cello notes.I need something nice to play, as I am quite tired of the bnowing excercises my teacher has given me to study.
If anyone knows of anything that could help, please write me.
Thanks.

I recommend the Suzuki books. Nice songs, variations are sometimes given as an under-note(which tend to be interesting), and many of the songs are on the Solo and Ensemble PML. If you`re a beginner, get a volume 1, 2, or 3 book. Obviously, the higher the volume the more difficult.

Feel free to email me, anyone, if you have questions. Can be string instrument specific or just a general question. I`ll be happy to help.

Wow. You people are crazy. In my opinion, the cello is one of the hardest instruments to learn and play. I`ve been playing for 12 years through the Suzuki method, and I am only in book 7. It really depends on how often you practice, I suppose, but compared to instruments like piano and guitar, the cello is far harder to play, especially in tune, since when a finger is just slightly off, it`s magnified so much..

Alright, does anyone have a good way to keep the #$@^ bridge from falling over and breaking. This is getting expensive. I put chalk on the grooves, I play for a week or so and WHAM! The bridge falls over and snaps. It can`t be a cheap bridge as it was a good brand and cost $50.00. This is the third bridge I have had to use. Any ideas?

DValley,
Your wooden bridge breaks all the time?! That’s strange and extremely uncommon.

All right, does anyone have a good way to keep the #$@^ bridge from falling over and breaking.

-No, and there isn`t a way either. If you put the bridge on incorrectly, it will just fall over or just be crucked while holding the strings in place, because that happens to mine all the time. I actually had a warped bridge that was holding up the strings of my old cello ever since the mid to early 1900`s, maybe even longer from what the lady said that I got my cello from. The point is that the wood was so strong, it lasted that long. The funny thing is that when it finally broke in half from me stupidly trying to bend it straight in hot water, I glued the bridge back together with ELMERS WOOD GLUE (brown colored paste), put it back on the cello, and STILL was able to use that bridge, that glue is real strong. However I got a new one anyways later, just for the safety of my old cello.

- Yes, don`t buy that "cheap" brand anymore. Expensive doesn’t necessarily mean good, it can also mean "RIP-OFF". GET YOUR MONEY BACK it you haven`t already. Brands mean NOTHING, the only thing you have to pay attention to is what type of wood it is made out of. That old bridge I use to have was made out of some sort of strong pine, it was light as a feather yet hard as a rock.

What brand of bridges did you get?

The bridge I bought (the only one Sam Ash had) is an Aubert. It is maple, with adjustable feet. The first was the cheap Chinese one which came with the cello. I have not purhased a third one yet. I did glue the Aubert when I could not get another one fast. I have restrung the instrument, but not full tightened the strings pending the outcome of this discussion.

Adjustable feet?! The next bridge you get better be solid. I`ve never trusted the ones with adjustable feet. It`s better to get a solid bridge(not cheap weak ones either) and have someone shave the feet of the bridge to fit your cello.
