Im 15 and i started to play the violin about a month ago and now i use the vibrato... i think im now progressing... however, when listening to the cello, i was so amazed by its range... however, i think its really big and hard to carry on lessons... i just have one question in my mind... can you play the cello while standing up? i mean the acoustic cello... like is there an endpin about the height to the knee?

-Just picture you carrying a big Bass,LOL.

-I`ve actually played my regular full size cello while standing up, exept for the fact that I was holding it in the air with the pegs resting behind my gaw and shoulder. It`s just more comfortable playing the cello while sitting in a chair. You can play the big Bass while standing up because it`s real wide, theres no other way of playing it because it`s that tall, lol. The pin that I made for my cello is so long, that I could stand up while playing it (with my left foot standing on it`s toes), however it`s too light and skinny to stay in one place while playing it. I suppose if the cello was strapped to your body, then it might work.

do you know the cellist of bond? she plays an electric cello and i think she`s got not difficulties playing that instrument... however, i think that it is so, because its electric and much of the weight from the original instrument is cut-off but want to see someone play an acoustic cello while standing....

i`m 40 and just started cello lessons. here in paris i rent a cello for 26 euros a month with insurance. as i get better, i can get a better instrument and eventually rent to own.good because it`s not a huge commitment to start. i took some guitar many years ago but the french use "do, re, mi, fa, etc" instead of letters for notes. doubly hard to learn. any sources that explain this?

Using do re mi is common but they just represent the notes of any major scale. You have the same pattern starting on any note but ascending and descending with the common sounds. You should try to learn note names and reading properly although it is difficult at first. As a teacher, I generally say four weeks for adults to start to read without a huge effort.

hello. I have been playing violin for 5 years now and have finished the Suzuki Books up to volume 10. But it seems weird because at school, i get lower marks than my friend who has played violin only 4 years and is up to Suzuki vol. 5. Does anyone know if these volumes represent grades? And is my teacher just rushing me through them?
Also i am interested in Cello. Would it take me as long to learn by myself? I do not own one yet, but i plan to sneak in the music room and practice there. THey seem so interesting!

Dvalley,
I was looking for info on cello bridges when I ran across your post. I`m by no means an expert but here is a link to a website that gives some
general info about a cello bridges.
http://www.abcviolins.com/bridge.html
The bridge you bought was probably of good quality. From what i have read, the ones with self adjusting feet work well and they dont have to be cut to an exact fit like the other kind. It sounds like just maybe what is happening is that when you are tightening the strings, they are pulling on the top of the bridge causing it to go crooked. As you are tuning up, it might be helpful to keep a constant eye on the angle of the bridge. If it goes crooked, grab it firmly, one hand on each side "carefully" and slide it back straight.
If your cello is a cheap one like mine, it will go out of tune often and every time you tune it, the bridge will probably move just a little bit. All these little bits add up and the bridge can start to angle again. Just keep checking it and carefully putting it back in place. I took my new cello to a violin repair guy and he did what they call a "setup" for about 60 bucks. Among other things, the setup included checking the bridge feet to make sure they are cut properly and checking the height of the bridge.
hope this info helps !

No the fingerings arnt the same as cello, i useto play them both at the same time, and i found it realy hard to do, so i hadto choose either cello or violin. I chose cello But try your best and if your having touble then choose which one you enjoy more. And it would be easier witha teacher.

You can start violin at any age I think. Just get yourself a good violin teacher who is determined.
I have only been playing 6 years, but my teacher says I am playing at University level music.
It depends really on how much you enjoy it, not how old you are.
