Hey guys, I have a very nice Kohr 4/4 instrument, well kept, I need to get rid of it to help pay for my new cello. It was played on for 3 years straight, has a beautiful dark finish with a few varnish scratches on the back. For the price-range, I`ve been told you can`t beat the instrument. I also have a crummy wanna-be BAM hard case that I will GIVE away with it (it was one of those ebay sucker things), and a beautiful Londoner two star bow that I need to get some money for. Well, I`ve been thinking about starting up the cello. Put it onn ebay again. I`ll be on the internet on the 13th and the 14th and the 15th. I`ll check it out.

How much were you selling if for? If people see others that are similar to yours that are cheaper they will get them instead. If you ever put it on ebay again, then copy and paste the website in this section.

Well, here`s the deal. I bought my cello for $1250. Seeing as string instruments appreciate in value, the first time I listed, I put my reserve at $1400.00. The second time I listed I dropped the it to $1250.00. Most of the Kohr instruments that I see go on ebay are up around $1600.00, so I thought that either one of these prices is ver decent. Of course, I understand that it`s not what I think, but what the buyer thinks. Anyway, tell me what you think.

Stringed instruments don`t start to appreciate in value until they are VERY old, and if you take inflation into account, very few appreciate at all.

I doubt very much if you have any hope of getting more than half of what you paid for it.

I know that I can at least get what I paid out of it. It is not true that stringed instruments only start to appreciate when they are very old. If taken care of, you can start your appreciation very early in the life of the instrument. Granted, at this point it will be very hard to get MORE than what I paid for out of it, though it is worth more. But I can reasonably expect to get what I paid for it for a sale price. I`m sure that I can take it to a consignment shop, have it appraised, and sell it for at least 1250. I know of a good appraiser in Denver that I may take it to.

If you have found a method of getting back the purchase price on a used instrument within three years then I am sure a lot of people out there would be delighted to know how it can be done. The only way i know of (and I am in the trade) is to trade it with the shop you bought it from for a better one.

If I were to trade it to the shop that I bought it from, it would only return $1,000.00. The reason for this being that they are a dealer. I don`t like to use this annology because it does not give due credit to appreciation, but I will use it anyway.

If you were to buy a brand-new car from a dealership, and take it back in three months, they would only give you a percentage for trade-in value. Why? not really because the car is worth that much less, but because they have to make some money on the deal. Now, with stringed instruments (I assume that you are a string dealer) they appreciate in value for the simple fact that they get better with time. With brass instruments and the such, they depreciate. The difference? I don`t know, but I do know that stringed instruments will appreciate in a short ammount of time if taken good care of, and played. If an instrument is neglected, ie. never played, it will depreciate very quickly. If you were to take a Strad, and lock it up for a year, and come back to it, then it will be worth much less than when you put it away, but if you had it out, and played on it frequently, it will appreciate.

The simple fact is that I`m sure if I can find the right person, that I will be able to sell my cello for whatever price I want. I`m not trying to cheat anyone. The point is to sell it at a fair price, and for this instrument, I believe that it is worth around $1400.00. I will get it appraised to see what it is really worth.

E-bay is not the place to get full-value for something anyway. E-bay will get you at most "orderly liquidiation" value, which is less than full retail.

Like, if you HAD to sell your cello today, I may buy it for $500. Then I can go through the time and effort to try to extract some "retail" value for it.

Like selling a home, to get the right value, it may take several months. However, at the right price, it would sell today.

In an attempt to stay away from an argument, I will leave this one with just one comment. LIZ IS OBVIOUSLY NOT AN AMERICAN DEALER, THEREFORE SHE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE ECONOMY IN WHICH I AM ATTEMPING TO SELL.

There is one thing you people need to understand, the only cellos or other stringed instruments for that matter that depreciate in value are ones that are soo cheap that they fall apart a few weeks or months after there made (or after they`ve been played for a little while). Trust me, I`ve seen them before. Good cellos never ever depreciate in value. Old cellos that have been mistreated and broken are the only ones that even depreciate in value.
