The only people that build stringed instruments are Luthiers. You would have to go to a Luthier website to buy supplies to make an instrument. Build a cello :-)

hm, if you are building a standard instrument I can`t really say anything because I`ve never tried, but if you are builing a hybrid, you are just beginning, and don`t care to use a bow, you might want to try this. Get a piece of wood about 18 inches long, and cut out a neck shape (somewhat like a guitar). Then get a pot (like a cooking pot), about 3 or 4 inches deep, and maybe 6 inches wide. Drill a hole from the bottom of the neck about 3/8" wide. Get a piece of 1/4" threaded rod, thread it up the bottom of the neck till about 6 inches remain (or the width of your pot). Drill a 3/8" hole near the lip of the pot on opposite sides. Thread the rod through, and put a bolt on the end. You should end up with a banjo shaped instrument. You can experiement with different ways to put strings on it, I would suggest either welding something on the lip of the pot farthest away from the neck, and tying on guitar strings. For the neck you can either strip an old guitar of its tuners (although you may not have room on the neck for 6 strings) or buy a set at a guitar repair shop.Although I never finished the one I started, as soon as school is out I`m going to attempt it. The pot should help it resonate (as on a banjo) and you can experiment with nylon or steel strings. Have fun!

I have the plans to build a serpant and an ophilcide. A serpent is an instrument in an S shape, that has roughly the same range of the tuba. It was used in the 1800`s. Around the same time there was the ophilcide, a keyed instrument like a sax, but played with a trombone mouthpeice.

I made an amplified-violin-thingie for a science class once. It was a piece of wood, with a steel string strung across it. Screw on one end, wood with crack in in on the other. (for ball to fit in) I took out the pickup from a tape recorder and screwed it to the piece of wood under the string. I didn`t bother making a fingerboard.
