I`ve been playing the cello for almost 9 years and I`m almost 21. Everyone I know started playing around the age of 12.

Aww, don`t feel dumb, it is a well known fact that little children take, like, AGES to learn anything. As you get older, you can pick things up quicker, so you are at no disadvantage. Evidence of this is that most violinist started learning way before most cellist, cos primary schools offer violin lessons to the little kids, but not cello lessons (I wasn`t even allowed to play the cello till I was at LEAST 10, about 14 is the recoomeded age to start I think) but are all the cellist school orchestras, or anywhere, worse than the violinist? no, so don`t worry.

hey, don`t worry- the only advantage i can think of in starting v early is that by beginning on a small cello and working up to a full size the strain on your fingers to stretch is a bit less.
i started playing when i was about 8 and i`m still crap! i don`t think u should worry about it!

I`m 15 and have been playing for about a month. Don`t worry about playing easy stuff if you`ve just started. Everyone progresses at different levels. In band (I play trumpet there) there is a guy just a little older than me who can play much better, but has played for longer. Also, age does matter, I`ve found that when I start playing instruments now, I progress much more quickly than when I was younger (which may seem the opposite of the norm, but none-the-less true for me). Someone here mentioned grade 8 for cello, what type of standard is it and and where could i find the sight reading/performing material? Thank you,
Bonnie

My college professor was telling the class of a little 9 year old girl who lives in Japan and plays the violin professionally in a professional symphony orchestra. I`ve heard that she played a solo next to Yo Yo Ma once . Try not to compare yourself to those types of children, parents that are filthy rich and have enough money to have a private teacher teach their kid at the age of 4 everyday, till their a pro in 1 or 2 years like at the age 5. That`s how most of those Japanese children are, they practice their brains out, and play better than the pros.

i also know exactly how you feel.
all the members of my school string quintet have been playing since they were in the womb, and i only just started.
bugger.
meh, they needed a cellist desperately and they called upon me. problem is i feel like a total idiot standing up on stage playing pizzicato one note in a bar whilst the two violinists sweat over the middle section of rondo alla turca.
double bugger.
also, we have just been given one of the haydn string quartets.
triple bugger
once again, we also play Vivaldis Winter, and i feel like a dork cause i find it hard, and the first violinist looks like they`re having a walk in the park as their arm speeds over the stings at mach 4.5
quadruple bugger.
well, thats my bitch for today.
hope you enjoyed it!
bye!

Josh,

The question is that why is it hard for you, or what`s hard exactly? How long have you played?
