Who is your favourite cellist anyone? Mine used to be J Du Pre, but now it is Julian Lloyd Webber. I think his Elgar concerto is (dare I say it) better than JDP`s. Also, has any one heard his CD simply called `variations`. I don`t think many cellists would be able to play such beautiful classical music, then make the transition to playing the cello in rock/pop music so successfully. He is become as bigger legend as JDP, Yo yo Ma etc.

Well I don`t know who my favorite cellist is, may be Yo Yo Ma, but I would rather play beautiful cello music than listen to it assuming I can play it.:-)

Yeah, I normally prefer playing to listening, even though the pros obviously sound better than me.

Yes, I know what you mean, especially since their instruments cost at least $70,000 more than ours. They have very good sounding instruments and it is rare for someone young, like under 20 or so to have an extremely good sounding cello from the lack of money. I bought my 150-year-old Cello for $450 because it was in an auction; the thing was that it was also damaged from the decades and decades of not being repaired so I had to spend a lot of extra cash to fix it. I always remembered how bad the high school cellos always sounded, I thought my Cello sounded bad from all the damages, but when I brought it to the school, mine totally blew the others away. But then I figured, the reason why my cheap crap cello sounds soo good is because it`s OLD from being old and dry and that`s why professional cellists sound soo good, from their and even more expensive Cellos, even when they are playing "Marry had a Little Lam".

Hi, my name is Karel Bredenhorst.
You guys ever listened to the Bach suites by Anner Bylsma? Not that he`s my favourite cellist, but he`s on my list!

A few days ago I opened my new website www.cellist.nl.
On this site you can find a soon-to-be-very-large database of professional cellists, cello teachers and their students from all over the world.
Please help me and subscribe and add or edit as many cellists and links as you want, and help the database to grow. Add your teacher, add your teacher`s teacher and, of course, add yourself!
So please, tell all your cello-friends and colleagues about www.cellist.nl and let them share their knowledge with us!

Thanks

It has to be Yo Yo Ma. The way he plays with his whole heart and spirit simply melts me...
