I`m looking to expand my repretoire, and am looking to add a 5 string to my skill set. Anybody got suggestions? I`ll be putting it to a Yorkville BM100 (100W RMS), and am looking for something with decent tone.
I`m currently using a Cort Action IV (and loving it - great tone for a cheap bass!), but don`t necessarily want another Cort.
Also, I know when you go 5 string, you get a low B (standard tuning). What string is next on a 6 string? High B? Or low G?

Actually, I think it`s a high C, but I`m really not sure. Just ask the music store people about a tenor bass. That`s the 5-stringers with one higher string. Bye!

Right, I just read this. % stringers are good for dance style music and I believe six-stringed is more for funk or something. But the good ol four stringer can go with any music style. It really just depends on what sounds good and feels comfortable to you.

Thanks for all the replies.
I guess it would make sense that it would be a high C on the 6 string.
And I`m looking 5, `cause my guitar players like their low E, so I need a little more distinguishment (if that`s a word).

Hey, I play a 5 string Ibanez SR405, it was the first bass that I owned. I am a big fan of Ibanez bass`s , alot of people tell me they are nothing special though. The thing I like about it, is that you have a sweepable low mid and high EQ right on the bass, and a sweepable panpot for between the 2 pickups. Thats aside from the controlls on tour amp (I use a 1968 ampeg B25B 55-watt Tube amp).
I was also looking into an Ibanez EDA905(f) Its cool because of the Piezo pickups(bridge pickups) and the erganine(spell???) body. Has a good tone.
5-strings are becomming more popular with heavier music, metal, stuff like that because of the low B. I`ve heard of guitar players tuning their E down to a B just to make the music heavier.
6-strings - Very Jazzy/Funky styles are used on 6 strings I`ve noticed. Although, when you look at Victor Wooton, he uses a 4 string and Funks it up more than anyone I`ve heard. I guess its personal preference. I play Rock music on a 5-string.

-------------------------------------
The lowest E on a 5 or 6 string bass
is NOT any lower than on a 4 string.
The only notes LOWER than on a 4 that
you get with a 5 are B C & D, and the
B is usually pretty sad.
BTW, most 4 strings have 3/4" string
spacing, but many 5`s have much less.
You need to decide about your spacing
first. If you need 3/4", that really
narrows things down [but has nothing
to do with price, they run the whole
range, bottom to top $$].

For those rocking the Cort Action V, how are the electronics? My Action IV has horrible `touch` on the volume controls - they`re more like toggle dials - either full on, or off completely (however, tone is fine, I get more and more tone as the dial turns).
If the Action V`s are anything like the IV`s, it may be high time for a new axe!
