I started out with a low-end Epiphone that was marked down because of a purely cosmetic nick on the back. My suggestion, get a refurbished or dinged floor model. I wouldn`t suggest the Squier Affinity series because the action is too close to the body, but you can probably do some major raising of the action if your sentiments are the same.

Washburn & Yamaha offer (I won`t use the the word "make") some pretty decent basses at good prices, comparable to Squiers. I`ve had the Washburn and the Yamaha, but not the Squier, which could be allright, but just didn`t have a good feel. I believe that Washburn & Yamaha are made by an independent manufacturer, same as Epiphone, and that the names are mere logos to identify them. Strat Man Dwight

My first electric bass i own and still use, because i just got an upright, is a dean edge 4
the body shape and most all of the other things on it are in very good condition, and it only costed $150 USD. I prefer playing it ver most cheap fenders and such
