Is guitar harder to learn thatn violin? No, it is easier. You don`t have to deal with the bow, it is fretted so that there are no big issues with intonation.
Is it easier to learn to be good? I doubt it. All instruments will take all of your attention to be played to their fullest. But you can definitely get up to speed faster on the guitar.
My son plays both, he is 7 years old (as do I, but he is much better :-).
The most annoying thing for the violinist is to get used to the viol tuning: 4ths, with a major 3rd mixed in, which is what the guitar uses. In other words, chord shapes are different, and where you are expecting to go for an interval is different. But it is not insurmountable.
The different tunings will actually help you to train your brain. And, you can also experiment with other tunings, like "open" tunings (do this on the fiddle, too, e.g. GDgd).
One thing the guitar gives you which you lack in the violin, is the ability to more easily make direct major and minor chords, rather than the 2nd inversions. This is due to the 4ths and major 3rds tuning.
You will discover that the chords are not always sweet on a guitar--they are a compromise. Depending on how you tune, you will have different chords sweeter than others, or all of them equally edgy. Also, try not to mash down on the strings when you finger them. Doing so will stretch the strings and make the chords noticably sharped.
Have fun!
