These are the strings if the guitar. Take your gutar, hold the neck of it in your left hand, and the body in your right. Hold it with the face of the guitar facing you. This is the orientation of the tab, string 1 is for the first string of the guitar, string 2 for 2 on the guitar, and so on. Tab reads from left to right like the english language. The numbers on the tab corespond to the fret that you play. The example above is the G chord. On the 1st string, you place your finger on the 3rd fret, on the 5th string, you place your finger on the 2nd fret, and on the 6th string, you place your finger on the 3rd fret.
The on ly bad thing about tab is that it never tells you What finger to place, it just tells you where you need to place it.
