when u see an "X", it doesnt want u to hit that string.
when u see the "0", it means its an open string. u pluck that string, but dont press on any frets.
i know it sounds tuff but just takes practice.

with the X, u can hit it, if u can make it mute.
so its not making noise. i guess thats what they mean by heavy dampening.

damping is just muting. (i think i said dampening)
u dont want that string to make noise.
when u palm mute u deaden the sound of the whole chord after u hit it. you lay ur hand on the bridge at the same time. muffle the noise. use a lot of distortion to get the palm mute sound. also it helps if ur guitar has humbuckers not single coils.
to mute one string u can muffle it at fret or at the bridge.
sort of like when ur first starting out and u cant get a clean sound on all ur strings, but now ur doing it on purpose.

maybe they say it better....
Muting
Muting a string is simple: with the fretting hand, touch the string with a finger, but do not press it down, and strike the string. It is usually best to do this where a harmonic will not result, but strings can be muted at harmonics for special effect. In tablature, muted notes are marked with an "x" instead of a fret number.
Palm muting
Palm muting may or may not make the pitch of the string discernable. Very lightly rest the palm of the hand on or near the bridge, then fret and strike strings normally. Palm-muted notes are sometimes notated the same way as muted notes when the pitch is not discernable; otherwise fret numbers are given normally and the muted notes are marked "P.M." in tablature.
