the uke is pretty cool what most people dont no is that it was really a folk instrument before it hit hawiian mainstream. yes hawaiidid not invent it. and the uke is like a banjo in the way that it has a kind of (drone) string before you start on the bass strings. so in away the uke can be played individual notes it is fun to do and the strings bend really well but it is much more a chord instrument. i recomend going on google and typing uke chords. start there i would also buy a uke book if u can but if not dont worry to much. also i would mess around with notes and scales u should find that stuff on google too

i no this is not what uyou asked but i need to clear up what i said about the (folk) aspect. this instrument was invented by a Portuguese guy named Manuel Nunes who moved to hawaii to work in the sugar cane fields. the people loved it and soon it became a hawaiian traditinal instrument. it is considered folk because of its original origin. but the real reason i am typing again is to show u this this answers your note pickin question (of course it is not what u traditionaly think of a uke to be) hope u can enjoy.
