How do you think up riffs? I`ve been asked to join a band, but I really don`t understand how to make up riffs that are interesting! Any tips?

depending on what type of music u are going to play you need to know the chord progression throughout the song. if u understand the key u will understand wat notes u are supposed to play. for a start, just use the basic scale pattern.
interval for ionian pattern:whole whole half whole whole whole half
keep with this pattern starting anywhere on the fretboad.
so now u can play on c(key no # or b) and use this pattern and stay within scale. its the same for every note. start on f# and everything will be sharp except for b. which will make the notes sound right with the chords. but u have to remember. if the chords change or vary to different roots u always have to take that into consideration. for instance, if the concert instrument was playing a g7. then u would want to play a g mixylidian. always follow the ways the chords are built.
this is pretty hard stuff when it comes to soloing and improvisation.
i dont know if i set anything straight with ur problem but if u have ne more email me and ill see if i can help u out.
