I just purchased my first electric to go along with my 3 year old cheap-o yamaha accoustic. Not the point.
my question. I see a lot of tab with "Drop D" tuning, or "tune to Eb." How do I do that on either guitar. I have a capo, and a cheap tuner.
If somebody could explain at least those two, if not "drop tuning" in general, I`d greatly appreciate it.

Eb means you turn the entire guitar a half step out, meaning that if you would normaly tune your guitar to EADGBE you would in staed tune it to Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb ( flat is a half step down ) easiest way to do this would to be tune your guitar to Standard E tuning and hit the 4th fret on the low E and hit an open A tune the A until it sounds like the 4th fret of the Low E and then go to the 5th fret or the Low 5 and tune it until it sounds like the Open A string, the just do a standard tune the rest of the way down the strings and neck. Hope this helps you

This is how you tune in drop d just tune normally and then make the 2 strings with the zeros the same.
e|----------------------------------------------------------------|
B|----------------------------------------------------------------|
G|----------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-----------0----------------------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-------0--------------------------------------------------------|

The easiest way to tune your guitar to Eb is to put your capo on the first fret then tune normally to E.
Now when you take the capo of your guitar is in Eb.
This is a easy way to do it if you have a tuner that only recognises E A D B G E like my cheap one.
Lots of great bands have used Eb (nirvana, smashing pumkins, our lady peace) but it doesnt alter the way you play the guitar, chord shapes are still the same ect.
Drop D tuning means that most standard chords will not sound right, although you can play a power chord with one finger. Drop D is good for playing low riffs and stuff like new born by muse, most nu metal crap is in drop D though and it becomes quite easy to start sounding like them.
there are other tunings like Open D and Open G which SLide guitar players use like the white stripes and beck. These are more complicated to tune your guitar to.
If you want me to explain further just ask.

Drop tuning is very easy to accomplish if u have an electric tuner. All u have to do is (starting from the biggest string) tune to CGCFAD. If you have an electric tuner, it should show the note you are on.
