godsmack uses both C and D tuning. Slipknot uses B#. the Guitars hold tune because they are Bartones. I someone is really interested in alter. tuning, check out Sevendust. they use open G for a few of their songs.

Dream Theater on Train of Thought.
Drop C - you have to drop E to D, then tune the whole guitar down a step to drop c.
As far as maintaining the tension, you need thicker strings. Assuming electic, standard gauge ratios starting with .010 on first will handle drop d just fine. Drop C, you need a much thicker guage (012 or 013 on first, at least). If you want to go lower than that, get a baritone guitar!!!

I have seen some players with a guitar for every tuning. Some had 5-6 guitars. Not just for quick change but lower tunings should have thicker strings gauge to have good tension and tone.
Drop-D doesnt matter as much, its only down a little so changing strings neccesary.
