Hey.
I`ve never even heard of dead notes, but I know how to palm mute. You pland the soft side of your hand on the part of the strings where they come off the bridge (the saddals) so they touch the strings, but not too much. Then strum or pluck. I think it`s alright to move your hand clockwise a bit if it`s eaiser to play.

what that last guy said is good, and for a different sound, you can play with your fingers on top of the fret bars, but don`t let the note buzz.

A dead note is kust a note that`s muted very heavily, which results in more of a clci sound than rather a note.
It`s done the same way as muting, but heavier :D

use your fingertip (of lefthand, or whichever hand that ISN`T strumming...ie. the one of the fret/neck of guitar) to mute the string...you`ll have to experiment to find out how much pressure you need to apply...just practice and you should get it
