Scales, scales, scales, scales and more scales. Mostly all solos are based on scales.

Yes solos are based on scales, but experiment with whatever you can do. Switch to some distortion, and try making a solo with as little as 8 notes, until you hear something you like. Then slam down some chords, or lengthen the solos as you get better at it. Holding a note here & there, with sustain or bending is good too. You don`t have to keep it going by adding new notes costantly, all the same length. Strat man Dwight

ok guys and girls, here are some basic truths.
No one person has the right way top play or solo or compose or whatever. The best way to learn is to listen, listen to old records, blues, jazz, rock whatever! Don`t restrict yourself to one style. Play LOTS.... and then play more, go see live music, play with other musicians as much as possible!! Let go of your EGO, (sneering take note) no one likes a guitarist with attitude! be humble and if you hear someone play something nice say so, ask him or her to show you. Learn some basic theory if you like it can make a big difference. Don`t try to do it all at once. Learn solos note for note, try to learn as many as you can and play them until they are spot on and guess what happens next? your own style will form because you have a bunch of stuff to build from! You can`t build anything without material whether it`s a house or a song you need basic material.
Hope this helps some of you and the rest who think they know everything well nothing will help you anyway so stumble along in the dark and you will never achive greatness.

Franck

Well I would say im a really good solo person, I can play all the Metallica songs all through and many others.

Anyways the first thing you do is know the speed rythem beat etc. You don`t need to know this petatonic crap.u want a good solo you start with a good interlude and make it flow right into a solo. Example start low and then work your way high switch back and forth between low and high or mix it up. If your in a band you have an advantage. The drums are the key, listen to the beat that will tell you where to go. there is really no way to how to solo you have to work on it thats all there is to it. Fined a good insprarational band. Like Metallica, Van Halen, Guns And Roses, get Tab books of them and just practice on their stayels of playing.

In order to play you have to have a stayel. You can also have many. for a good solo you should start with blues or jazz but not metal metal is very good soloing but also very hard and very fast. So if your looking to play metal solos work up to it first. Another thing to learing is DO NOT RUSH rushing will make you very sloppy and makes whatever your trying to learn to take longer. You can not to listen to me its your choice but beleive it , it workes. E-mail me if you have Q`s. mrslash2u@comcast.net

To make guitar solos you must first know about the keys on a guitar, i don`t know them all so you should try to look them up somewhere. The first note of the song is whatever key it is in. Once you know which key it`s in, you have to know scales. There are hundreds of scales and I can`t name them all so look them up to. Whatever key the song is in, you can start a solo there as long as it has the same notes as the scale.

for example: if ur song repeats Chords G,C,Am,D. then the lead guy breaks off and plays single Notes in the G,C,Am,D scales(groups.) change KEy (G,C,Am,D) to match up with the chord as it changes. wow thats alot of notes to learn! (u can use ur guitar tuner help find these hidden notes if ur not into learning scales.) **Also know, if u have a G chord anyplace on the fretboard, any note in that chord can be played during a solo for G! so learn some chords at the 12th fret... pwew!
