Fellow Guitar Players,
May I suggest the following for approaching guitar solos. First of all for you guys writting your own songs it is very helpful to record the rythm part and play it back while you are putting your solo together. For example if your song is in the key of C Major which is spelled out:
C D E F G A B
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
And the first chord you play is C which is the first note of the scale also called the root note and the next chord you play is an F which is the forth note of the scale followed by a G chord which is the fifth note of the scale, then you have what is called a 1,4,5 progression or simply put C,F,G. Now start your solo with a C note. Let`s say on the 5th string third fret followed by a D note on the 5th string fifth fret, then an E note on the 4th string second fret followed by an F note on the 4th string third fret then a G note on the 4th string fifth fret and end it with a C note on the 3rd string fifth fret. Do you hear how it sounds in key? Notice how the A note which is the 6th degree and the B note which is the 7th degree of the scale where left out. You can add them in and you`ll still sound correct because the A and B notes are part of the C major scale. I would suggest you learn the pentatonic scales in the fixed positions first. THEY CAN BE FOUND ON THIS SITE. There are five positions. Start slow and build up your speed with each note sounding out smooth and clean. Use a clean amp setting without distortion. Distortion hides little blups and badly fretted notes. If you don`t take the time to learn it right and sound each note clean then you`ll sound REAL bad with distortion! Hope this helps and have a BLAST.

I`m so sick of people who say "you just play from the heart like Dave Mustane. This is just total crap Mega death music obviously has typical western chords in it becasue on way or another that dave idiot, who can`t sing for crap, has learnt the chords or figured them out by ear. As for solos- comming from the heart and writing them without musical training is bollics. You need to know ehglish to write poetry don`t you? Same goes here. By the way i`m not being elitist because i have been trained- knowledge can come all by ear just like english can be improved by reading, but i am sick of poeple insisting that they have more genuine solos because they don`t know what the hell they are doing. also knowing scale theory helps you be different anyway.

You Guys Ever Try Arpeggios They Help Clerify things and yes The Penta And Hepta Scales Help Wrather in Blues, Metal, Goth, Punk, Glam, or whatever your going to need to know the scales and arpegios period!!! Exploding solos ar not written overnight most have been written then modified the modified again and agian. Even if you make a solo you dont like try to modify it use bits of it here and there Ive been playing for a long time and thats the best advice i can give you......

ok this is gonna sound a hell of a lot more simple than these others...just use power chords and use the 4 strings in that area...an example
e----------------------------------------------
a----------------------------------------------
d----------------------------------------------*
g--------4-------------------------------------*
b--------2-------------------------------------*
e----------------------------------------------*
use the strings with the asteriks around them and just change power chords...u can throw in an odd note every once in a while but they really sound great and thats how i try 2 write most of my solo`s

by the way quit talking about all these damn scales...most solo`s arent based on scales, their based on the originality of the guittarist. do u see ne1 w/ my method...nah ya dont.

Well u cant really tell someone how to make a guitar solo. Havin some knowledge of guitar theory can only aid ur playin so there is no harm in learnin it. It is important to learn the pentatonic major scales aswell as there relative minor scales in all the positions off by heart. i.e if u take Alive by pearl Jam, the chord progression is (Em,G,D,A),the Em pentatonic is used, but u can also use the G major pentatonic dependin on wat mood ur trying to get across. However learnin these scales only acts as a foundation to making solos. U shouldn`t let the scales restrict ur playing. Jus because a note doesn`t appear in a scale of the key ur playing in it doesn`t mean u cant use it, as long as it sounds good use it.
A good way to practice improvisation is to put on a CD and jus jam over the song. At first u will suck but then over time it`ll come naturally by ear. Well hope this helps jus tryin to do my bit.

yeah sorry jus correcting some istakes in my previous response. Alive chord progression is (E,G,D,A). The solo uses the G major pentatonic which is exactly the same as the E minor pentatonic.

I`ve been playing for only 8 months, but I`ve put my whole heart into it; 3-6 hours a day, from the start. I like Ozzy stuff from Jake E. Lee and Rhoades. These are some excellent songs with amazing solos. One thing I use when tabbing out little riffs and quick solos is hammers and pulls. These speedious little smashes make great sound. For a great sounding hammer and pull used solo, listen to the first 12 seconds of the outro solo from "Mr. Crowley."
