I am appalled by your ignorance to the art of written music. And yes, you sure are a poser like too many "guitarists" today.
And for the record, I do read music.

I absolutely read music and in different positions up and down the neck.
You are only shortchanging yourself in the long run if you don`t ever tackle it. You`ll never really get all that music theory jazz and will be limited in what you can play. With a bit of effort, most people can be good at reading notes in 6 months to a year.

...Anyways...
Don`t get me completely wrong, chords are essential for jazz and such, but you gotta read the notes too for good guitarism... or something. I`ve just had more than my fill of inept "guitarists."
I`ve been reading music since 4th grade on the cello. I will be in 10th now, so a total of 6 years. I started way before that on piano, but didn`t read music--just played by ear.

Poser, Why are you angry at people who read music? I`ve been playing R&R for 30+ years by ear. About 5 years ago I decide I wanted to learn to play classical/spanish style. In order to do so I HAD to learn to read music. There are so many progressive musicians that started to read music & play in the classical tradition prior to playing R&R. Remember, sheet music is the language for all instruments. There is nothing wrong with playing by ear. Reading music is a choice I made. I just wish I had made it sooner...

I also wonder how many guitar players read music. Maybe 5 or 10 out of a hundred? I started about 55 years ago but got serious in about the last 10. Wanted to play many kinds of music for which I know of no recordings. Taught myself to read and play in any key. Now can sight read any key and play it, maybe with the help of a capo, in 11 other chromatic (I guess that`s right)keys. So I can play piano or organ music, old gospel songs, ragtime, anything. The adavantage of being able to change keys is to put a song into my singing range or into a key with open bass strings for runs.
