For Jazz I would suggest a fender stratocaster. The single coil pickups create great tone for what youre looking for. Personally I use an Epiphone version of the Gibson SG, but its not what you would want.

Umm, fender telecaster would probably also sound good i havent played on them much. Shy away from anything with humbuckers for jazz.

By the way, what sort of amp are you playing on? thats more important than the guitar.

Curry, I don`t mean any offence, but what do you mean--"shy away from anything with humbuckers for jazz"? Lost of people play jazz on humbuckers or h.b. spin-offs. Such jazz greats like B. B. King, Pat Methene, Wes Montgomery, John Scofield, and Santana all use some sort of humbuckers. All the guitarests I`ve met in jazz bands use Guilds, Ibanezes, Washburns, Epiphones, or Gibsons with humbuckers. I myself use an Epiphone LP for jazz.

You need humbuckers for jazz unless you have one of my Stratocastewr style guitars, which I build for myself. I make series electical connections of the pickups which creates pseudo humbuckers. Ever heard of anybody refer to a Jazzbox? There`s been a reason, for decades. You want hollow body style, usually archtop with F-holes. You will be very happy if you look at www.rondomusic.com and check out their Agile guitars. Even happier if you buy one. $400 - $500 model is excellent. Strat Man Dwight

fender jaggmasters are pretty good...u cant really find them in many stores though ud probably have 2 buy it off the internet but as for the amp i would go w/ a fender twin reverb...great sound for almost any genre of music...it can give u anything from the crunchy distorted sound to making ur electric sound basically like an acoustic...i hope this helped

Hi All,

Many thanks for the tips and ideas. I`m also looking for a good finger-picking guitar, for mostly jazzy type stuff, and am reconsidering the Strat. I currently play an Ibanez Artstar (2 x humbuckers), but it has never realy made the sound I like.

So yeah, I have a feeling reading these posts, that a Strat may be the way to go. Does anyone else here fingerpick?

Cheers,

P

The Stratocaster is NOT conventionally considered a jazz guitar (although it would certainly be a better choice than the Telecaster, for what that`s worth).

In this price range, play some Ibanez Artcore hollowbody guitars and see what you think.
