You`re right. They`re pickup height adjustment screws. Raising the pickup, whether you raise just one side or both, will make the guitar sound louder, through the amplifier, and could even make it unpleasant or distorted. You can also cause magnetic string pull "gauss" or a physical collision between strings and pickups poles by getting them too close. Look for the sound that suits you best. Strat Man Dwight
