I am just tring to learn the guitar and had one question. I am able to read music so is it better to learn the specific notes, the chords or both? And what is the difference.

Both. Playing the notes will help you immensely with your understanding of the guitar, and makes the song or piece you are playing recognizable. It is also advisable to practice scales. But you must have chords for variety, the odd arpeggio, and definitely for a fuller, richer, textured sound.
