It depends where it was made and how it was put together. They can be great or they can suck. I would generally recommend Yamaha guitars for beginner guitar players who don`t want to spend to much.
I play a Takamine myself.

I know someone with an acoustic yamaha, it sounds pretty good but it is really ugly! If youre a beginner it doesnt really matter - its good enough.

I got an Yamaha Eletric guitar for christmas and it is pretty good for now. I could bendmy strings when I am paying a song and it won`t get out of tune. And for Ashley Mabey why your friends guitar broke is because it sucked

I have several mid-priced Yamahas --classical, electric, and hybrid -- that are all quite nice and have held up very well over time. My two Yamaha keyboards have put up with tons of use.
It used to be that the beginning Yamahas were heads above the Squiers, but the Squiers got better, so now they are closer. However, with a good setup, I think the Yamahas last longer. The Squiers tend to fall apart after a couple years.
