I am sure you`ve probably done them before. The Hammer-on is picking the string only once but hammering your finger onto another note after the first pick. The pull-off is the opposite. You are simply pulling your finger off the string to make another note without having to pick it. This is obviously fantastic for speed. Van Halen is known for doing this.
