buy a squire. renting a guitar is ridiculous.
i looked up slammers because someone else on this site had a similar problem and they just seem like guitars built to look like popular brands. cosmetics are important but its the sound that matters.
squire is kind of cheap but if u try it out in the store, make sure u get a good one. it will last you a while.
i wouldnt go lower then $150 US. if u do, then ur getting pretty cheap wood and parts.

Hey. you know if i were you i`d buy it the squire.they`re smaller thana normal fender but, it requires less stretching down the fretboard. if i had a chance to get a squire i would take that thing faster than a flash.

guys dont get a bullet, i know its so tempting to see a guitar that looks good around a hundred bucks but, really anything under $150 is really pushing it.
they use plywood and after a few months u might not be able to get it in tune. the switch is flimsy, and the fretboard might cause more buzz then music.
anyway, anything u buy, u have to spend time playing in the store. and dont just let the sales guy play it on his $1,000 amp. most of them can make anything sound good.

if u only have a $100 then ur a bit stuck.
ebay has deals on used guitars but thats really tuff to say.
if its all u can afford, save up to get an affinity strat by squire. thats about $150.
the cheapest guitar i ever bought was a Squire Affinity Tele Special $169. (i always wanted a tele.)
But, so you know, they had 2 of them on the wall. i played them both and only one of them was acceptable. the other had a strange wood pattern in the neck.
with any first time guitar, u really need to bring someone who knows how to pick a good one. especially with low end models like squire. they are very hit or miss.
by the way, ive had mine bout a year, i luv it. LAf, after i filed down the sharp frets that were cutting into my hand.
yep u get what u pay for.

You know, the strat is a decent guitar but if u really want a good cheap guitar, find a guitar made by arbor, they aren`t the best but have a wide range and very reliable.....another word of advice....never, never, never get a fender jagstang, by far the worst guitar ever except the one`s at wal-mart

I`ll throw in my two cents here.
I do not sell guitars but I do have an affiliation with a store which sells some brands that are incredible values. The first thing you should know is that any guitar you will be looking at under $200 will almost certainly be imported from China. It`s not that big a deal IF you find a good brand AND have it set up right off the bat. Many of the imports are extremely similar (as a matter of fact many different brands are actually produced in the same factories!)
Most places pull their new guitars out of the box and throw them on the wall for sale. With the low cost of the instruments, the manufacturers don`t do a whole lot to make them playable. My recommendation is find a local store & talk with them. See if they have their guitars set up and adjusted in a shop (and not by "the dude" on the sales floor) before they are put up for sale. Most places do not do this because it adds to their cost. This is also one of the drawbacks of mail order/internet sales.
It also might be worth your while to go to a repair shop in your area and ask if they would be willing to check out a few instruments for you--it may cost a couple of bucks for their time but trust me--you will come out ahead. That`s something that I offer to do for people. I enjoy helping people get guitars they are happy with.
The store I work with sells three brands that I can whole-heartedly recommend. (Although they may be names you`ve never heard of) S101, Canvas and Silvertone all have inexpensive guitars that are very playable (after they are set up). I`m amazed at the value of these guitars--Just so you know what I am talking about, they are package deals with all the "stuff" you need and all three of the models I am looking at are under $269. Right now I am looking at about 30 that just came in that need to be prepped but when I am done with them I would put them up against just about any guitar even at twice the price.
Good luck on your search!
