I know guitar, slap bass, and harmonica. So i am well aware of getting into bad habits i.e. playing chords/fingerpicking with the "wrong fingers".

Im just starting to learn piano now. What habits should i avoid that beginners(or advanced) pianists fall into commonly.

I should also mention im learning to play on a keyboard. Will that harm me in the long run when i move to piano? Or is it eazy to pick up the "petals" seperately?

thanks in advance!

My first teacher always taught me to hold my hands curved when playing as if I was holding a ball in my palm. Don`t play with flat fingers/hands!

About going from keyboard to piano... I don`t think it will be much of a hassle. Pedals aren`t used all of the time and they`re not hard to get used to.

I`m not sure what other help I can be of. Have fun! =)

be sure to always have good posture and when you want to play louder, use your arms instead of hammering with your fingers.

also, its very nice that when you give a performance to memorize your pieces. thats always what my teacher makes me do.

on some chords you can push down the right pedal at the same time to add "color" and be sure to add lots of emotion and dynamics when you play. as my teacher would say "You're not playing the typewriter!"

about starting off on a keyboard... i did the same thing for a while because we didnt have a piano at our house when i started. after a couple of months we got a piano and it wasnt that hard to switch over.

I have been playing piano since the age of four and i started out with the suzuki method. i actually didnt learn to read music until about a year after i started. im glad i started out with suzuki, because now its super easy for me to memorize pieces.

good luck with learning piano! it is a very beautiful instrument and im sure you will enjoy playing it. you should find it easier to learn since you can already play an insturment.
