I`m sorry if it sounds like a pretty stupid question, but i`m not in piano class. I did have lessons, but I missed my oppurtunity to ask my teacher what level I`m in.

Just to give you an idea, I CANNOT sight read. I can learn music in song books like the one you get when you buy a keyboard pretty quickly. It took me like 2 weeks to figure and master 2 pages of Ronda Alla Turca(turhish march) by mozart, and like an hour to master the first page of Fur Elise.

Thank you for your time...even if you can`t help.

well, the pieces put in the keyboard books are simplified and made easier... my guess is your about grade 2 or possibly even 3... but theres usually places where you can play infront of the person and theyll give you a grade to start at... youve quit taking piano lessons? if you want to get better, thats really not the best idea. without piano teacher you technique will usually worsen and if you ever try to play harder pieces, youll never be able to get them to par.
but yah, i thhink your proubly about grade 2

piano lessons are overated. I am self taught and have enjoyed the learning experience .My friend has played for about 11 yrs and is about at the top of this level system and I still play the same virtuoso books that he is assigned(Whose grade level matters there?) If you want to be a student of music, have a thourough understanding of music, and be able to play smoothly in bands go with lessons. If you are just trrying to play some impressive sounding music id buy some books with cd excercises and read a bit and continue to read and play songs that you like.

if you do it that way , the pieces you play will never get nearly as well as those who have taken lessons due to lack of technique... without technique you can, besides sound like crap, develope carpotunal or tendanitous.

technique is emphasised in many self teaching books. you cant say for certain that self taught technique will always end up sounding like crap. all im trying to say is it is possible to pick up the instrument by yourself
.

but its alot easier with the help of a knowledgable teacher... and if you want to become ... say a teacher... it will be hard if your self taught because you proubly will be unable to take exams.
